BY-GEN Hard Surface Skin Style

Hard Surface Skin will take the edges of a mesh and create a hard-surface skin around them. This mode is not intended to be applied to other objects to create a visual style, rather, it is meant to be used to construct shapes from the ground up.

Create a plane, delete all but 2 vertices and an edge, and continue from there.

Construction of the Shape

  • In edit mode, you can see how the vertices and edges are composed to create a simple pathway for the skin to follow.

With a vertex selected, pressing CTRL+A will allow you to scale the influence of the Skin modifier around that region.

Increasing Resolution

  • By increasing the Octree Depth value in the Remesh modifier, you can increase the resolution of the mesh, and consequently allow the skin to occupy more of the path. With an insufficient resolution, the skin modifier often has trouble filling the entire path.

Bevel Width

  • By increasing the 'Width Percent' in the Bevel modifier, you can create interesting patterns along the edges.

Removing Grooves

  • By disabling the Edge Split modifier, you can remove the grooves that appear along the edges of the facets.

Facet Thickness

  • By changing the thickness value in the Solidify modifier, you can adjust how far extruded the facets are from the surface of the original mesh.

Displacement

  • By adjusting the strength value of the Displace modifier, you can inflate the final result.
