Ambient Grunge
A node group for generating 100% procedural grunge/dirt effects.
Easy Results
Just plug the node in, provide an appropriate vector input and the grunge will be generated around your objects. Adjust the parameters until you find a suitable result.
Works Great With Other Materials
The node provides a color input as well as a mask output, meaning that you can easily combine the results with other materials. The above example makes use of the ‘Complex Iron’ material from the Modular Metals pack, and uses Ambient Grunge to add some subtle dirt effects.
Lots of Parameters
A variety of input parameters give you a large amount of control over the influence of the effect: Edge wear, color overrides, range restriction, cleanup and more.
Before and After
Here is a beautiful before and after demonstration provided by community member Skurzef, showing how dirt procedurally accumulates around areas where there is a high density of geometry.
Watch the Introductory Video
In this video, I provide a hands-on demonstration of the initial version of the node. New features have been added since the video was created, but the same principles of use still apply.
Supports Texture Baking
Procedural materials can be baked into texture maps in Blender, which is great for optimization or completing the look of VFX or game assets for export into other software. If you want to learn more about how this works then watch this video.
